Steven Laine Lovely, 53, of the Common Road, Waitsfield, passed away at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington surrounded by his family on Wednesday, March 7, 2007, following a long and valiant battle with thyroid cancer. Born in Barre on January 18, 1954, he was the son of Wilma Lodascia (George) Lovely and the late Lloyd Lyle Lovely. On May 16, 1987, he married the former Dorothy Ann DeFreest in Warren. He was previously married to the former Jean Wheeler.

Steven attended Cabot Elementary School and St. Johnsbury Trade School. He worked for Merriam Graves Co. for 16 years, first as a truck driver and then as a manager. Since 1989 he has been employed by the DeFreest Farms in the Mad River Valley. While living in Cabot, Steven was an active member of the Cabot Fire Department and the Cabot Ambulance Service. In his leisure time, he enjoyed bowling, fishing as well as racing at Thunder Road where he competed in the Street Stock and Flying Tigers divisions. One of the highlights in Steven's life was spending time with NASCAR driver Dale Jarrett at New Hampshire International Speedway in Loudon. His favorite times, though, were in the company of his family, especially is wife, children and grandchildren.

Steven is survived by his wife of 20 years, Dorothy Lovely of Waitsfield; his mother, Wilma Lovely of Cabot; his children, Rachael Marie McLeod and her husband, Daniel, of Barre, Joshua Steven Lovely and his wife, Melanie, of Barre, Sarah Ann Lovely of Waterbury, Hannah AliciaJo Lovely and Rebekah Alison Lovely, both of Waitsfield; his grandchildren, Gregory Steven McLeod, Connor Troy McLeod, Tyler Shawn McLeod, Kayla Marie Lovely, Brittney Jean Lovely, and Joshua Steven Lovely Jr.; two sisters, Marcy Martin and her husband, Wayne, of Cabot, Lisa Guy and her husband, Edward, of Montpelier; two brothers, David Lovely and his wife, Chris, of Marshfield, Ronald Lovely and his wife, Brenda, of Plainfield; four cousins who are like siblings, Rose Talbot of Cabot, Claire Lines of Corning, NY, Sandra Menard Alexeunis of Enfield, NH, and Richard Sullenberger of Painted Post, NY; as well as nieces, nephews and extended family. He was predeceased by a sister-in-law, Margaret (LaPan) Lovely.

Memorial services will be held from the Cabot United Church on Friday, March 16, at 1 p.m. A gathering and time of remembrance will be held on Sunday, March 18, from 1 to  4 p.m. at the home of Theodore and Tammy DeFreest, 2285 Brook Road, Warren, the home in which Steven and Dorothy were married.
