Stanley Leroy Ripley, 77, of Ripley Road, Waterbury Center, passed away at the Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin on Friday, March 9, 2007, following a period of declining health. Born in Waterbury Center on June 26, 1929, he was the son of the late Raymond and Agnes (Gray) Ripley. On August 23, 1952, he married the former Barbara Reagan at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Moretown.
Stan attended school in a small country schoolhouse located at the top of Loomis Hill in Waterbury Center. As a very young man, he helped his father on the family farm and while still in his teens, began his own canned milk collection business serving area dairy farmers needing to get product to the local creamery. Stan later worked for Cabot Creamery picking up milk throughout central Vermont.
A skilled woodworker, Stan went to work for Davison Fine Furniture in Waterbury and also the Stowe Canoe Co. Stan's home is filled with beautiful maple furniture he built while working at Davison's. Most recently, Stan was employed by the state of Vermont in the Buildings Division at the Vermont State Hospital in Waterbury, retiring in 1997.
Stan served his country during the Korean War as an activated member of the Vermont Army National Guard, 206 Field Artillery from 1950 to 1952 stationed in Germany.
In his leisure time, Stan enjoyed hunting, woodworking, sugaring, and spending time at his camp on Lake Elmore. He was a member of Waterbury Grange #237. Family held a special place in Stan's heart. Truly his happiest times were in the company of his wife, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and his siblings and family.
Stan is survived by his wife of nearly 55 years, Barbara Ripley of Waterbury Center; their children, Candace Kellett and her husband Peter of Waterbury Center, Darla Hartt of Waterbury Center, Darcy Woodruff and her husband John of Waterbury Center, Shawna Conoscenti and her husband Dale of Indianapolis, IN, and Kevin Ripley of Waterbury Center; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; three sisters, Pauline Lemery of Waterbury Center, Pearl Metayer of Hyde Park, and Jacqueline Beitzel of Hickory, NC; as well as nieces, nephews and extended family. Stan was predeceased by two sisters, Lorraine Calkins and Sylvia Ripley, and two brothers, Howard Ripley and Frederick Ripley.
Funeral services were held from the Waterbury Center Community Church on Wednesday, March 14, at 11 a.m. with a reception following in the church dining room. There will be no calling hours. Interment will take place this spring in the Waterbury Center Cemetery.
