To The Editor:
I wanted to weigh in on the ongoing debate about the Waitsfield power line burial project and the town office placement debate.
I am the founder of Bridge Street Bakery c 1994 and spent 10 wonderful years as a business on that section of Waitsfield so hotly debated and there are a few observations I would like to add to the public thought.
First, the opportunity to bury the power lines on Bridge Street is not only a great and efficient chance to get this done while the street is dug up, but it will offer that historic district a rare and beautiful polish that tourists flock to for an authenticated historical district. This was done in Woodstock, Vermont, with great success. Tourism helps the entire community in the Mad River Valley.
The second point is the preservation of one of our historic buildings might seem costly at first but to stabilize these buildings only further adds charm and presence to this great neighborhood. Think of Montpelier's old post office and the loss that was to the town. I was taught quality is remembered after cost is forgotten. The town could and would be able to absorb the cost, I am sure. It is because they are so careful with their money to begin with. (A good thing.)
Finally, a strong economic base in any town has to be nurtured and helped as these projects could. Perhaps, it could help stop the loss of future businesses.
