To The Editor:
I would like to express my thoughts as to why the select board should strongly reconsider the underground conduit project. The total project was never explained prior to the vote.
The article passed with only about 8 percent of the registered voters voting, and I wouldn’t say it was almost unanimous. I believe the yes votes came from people who didn’t understand the project or where money was no object. If you surveyed those attending the meeting you would find very few working middle and lower class taxpayers there.
Other unknowns are: Where will the transformers be? We do have signed agreements with the customers that they will pay a few thousand dollars for their line tap. Where will the guy wire be for the pole at the bridge? What about the phone lines? Can customers be hooked up without digging? I could go on, but that’s enough.
Did you notice that article was written with a five-year pay back to avoid the mandatory Australian ballot where it would be extremely unlikely to pass.
Due to the extremely small vote and all the unknowns I believe the select board has a civic duty to reconsider this project. They should either drop it or at least put it up for an Australian ballot.
