"Has the U.S. government ever introduced an entitlement that met its
spending and cost goals?" Social Security comes immediately to mind.
It's been better than ever expected. And anybody who has Medicare
doesn't want that to go away. I reiterate that the history of the first
part of the 20th century proves that a good mix of free-market socialism
is best for the USA. Small business is the best provider of many
services, but we, the public, have to take care of the big stuff,
infrastructure, education, health care, safety, environment and others.
Our financial system has to be strictly regulated to avoid debacles like
this present depression.
The only country we are losing is the one that kept the working class in
its place and let the rich take an unreasonable slice of the economic
pie. So let's lose it and get on with transforming our society. The only
way to rebuild our middle class and to ensure domestic tranquility is
to make sure that we have adequate economic security at all levels of
society. Health care reform is only a small but necessary step in our
progress towards a more humane and peaceful society.
