To The Editor:
Read the latest edition of The Valley Reporter and you will learn that, as expected, the Waitsfield taxpayer will see yet another property tax increase next fiscal year, after having absorbed an approximately 30% increase in this year's taxes. School financing will drive this increase, again, not local expenditures. In fact, I know that local needs are languishing (like a new or upgraded town garage, fire department equipment and the ever-pressing road maintenance).
While the Vermont plan for school financing, one based on variable contributions from our towns based on their respective wealth, was novel and might have seemed equitable initially, we are now seeing its very expensive warts. Look no further than your own current tax bill for proof.
Taxpayers are stressed and troubled over this. We have few places to which we can turn for any solace more appropriate than the town leadership. Accordingly, does the select board have a plan to voice the concerns of its taxpaying citizens? Is there a survey or petition being prepared? Has the board contacted other towns' boards in an effort to amplify the message? Has the board contacted the League of Cities and Towns (an organization funded by towns) to enlist their guidance and support? Are our legislators hearing from us?
If the board feels helpless in the face of these rocketing tax bills and intends to do no more than collect our property taxes year after year in silence, we should be so informed. On the other hand, if the board intends to pursue available options, we need to hear that as well.
