To the Editor:
It’s time to remove the gravel from the Mad River. This is the opinion of those of us at The Madsonian Museum on Bridge Street.
Everyone wins. Flooding in Waitsfield Village will be reduced.
Fishing will return as the heated shallow water is replaced with normal flow. Canoe and kayak and tubing will return. The Decathalon canoes started in the Couples Club. Now you have to walk your canoe over the gravel bars.
Town roads will improve with good washed gravel as opposed to trucked in gravel with organic particulate that causes muddy roads. And it will save lots of money for the town.
The gravel bar from the bridge to the old dam forces the Mad River to spread out. The result is not good. The gravel bar will naturally get bigger every year as the stones and gravel wash down from the mountains.
