To The Editor:
In management theory, there is the Peter Principle, which says that people will rise to the level of their own incompetence. In psychology, there is the Dunning Effect, which says that people generally overestimate their own abilities and have difficulty recognizing their own ineptitude. As president, Donald Trump is a poster boy for both concepts.
Since his inauguration, he has repeatedly shown that he lacks the temperament, the comprehension, the empathy, the credibility, the moral integrity and even the basic skill level for the position he occupies. At this point we should not need any more convincing that this is true. Moreover, he has shown no interest in or willingness to change.
We currently have a devastating global disease, an economic crisis and on-going demonstrations for racial justice and police reform on our hands and a crucial election is coming up, so before it’s too late, let’s offer Mr. Trump a way out. Let’s make a deal with him (he loves deals). Let’s present him with something that (as a businessman) he will probably understand – a buyout. Let’s offer him, say, $1 billion tax free (he’d love that last part) on the condition that he take immediate early retirement from the presidency and that he agree never to run again for (or accept appointment to) any public office. It could be the innovative solution that we need in these strange and trying times.
