To The Editor:

Well, the inauguration is over and it’s finally official – the country is in the grip of a bunch of “sore winners,” a man with very poor impulse control has his finger on the nuclear trigger and global warming continues apace. Sad!

It is very difficult for me to respect Mr. Trump, but I have been able to muster up just a tiny bit of compassion for him in that he is so profoundly out of his depth and he seems to believe that reliance on bluster, BS and incessant tweets will somehow see him through the challenges he (and we) will now face.

What does the future hold? I consulted my trusty Magic 8 Ball and “Cannot predict now” was the response. My advice, if we want to see the forces of wisdom and compassion ultimately prevail, is to hope for the best and expect the worst. It seems like it is now going to be up to us ordinary citizens to avert and adverse consequences (whether unintended or due to incompetence, lack of judgment, inexperience or otherwise) by our own efforts. Instead of seeking greatness, let’s work together to make America good and try to avoid a decline into autocracy or oligarchy.
