To The Editor:
Referring to stories about Elmer Mehuron in the March 17, 2016, edition of The Valley Reporter reminds me of one experience.
I was in his store when it was on Bridge Street out toward the back where Elmer had his desk and did all his accounting. It was very near the beer cooler.
While finding what groceries I had come after, I noticed a kind of scruffy character open the cooler and take out his libation and wander unsteadily back out of the front door without paying. Elmer at his desk took full note of what had happened but didn't take any action.
Checking with the checkout clerk informed me that was so-and-so (forgot his name) who was considered the town drunk and lived just beyond where Brook Road meets Joslin Hill Road and comes in frequently.
Perhaps someone knows if Elmer kept a running tab on him.
