To The Editor:
As a Waitsfield School Board member and chair of Washington West Supervisory Union, I am aware of the financial challenges that are facing our schools and our communities. Many of these issues appear to be simple: Decrease school budgets and you will lower property taxes. Unfortunately, our system is much more complicated. We could be doing the very best in our schools to pass conservative budgets but not feel any relief on our property tax bills because we are also paying for decisions made in other districts. We also face the pressures of rising health care costs and unfunded mandates from the state. It's time for courageous, bold and transparent leadership on the issues of education, health care and economic development in Vermont—Heidi Spear, has won my confidence to lead on this effort and I hope you will join me in supporting her in the upcoming election.
