While 1,000 registered for the Mad Marathon, Mad Half and Relays, 850 happy runners crossed the finish line on a rainy Sunday, July 10, in the Mad River Valley. They were supported by 300 volunteers that weathered the conditions at aide stations, road and bike marshals, Mad River Valley Ambulance Service, medical, food, award, timing teams along with crowds along the course.
Christopher Battoo, 28, of Boston, Massachusetts, was the winner of the 2016 Mad Marathon in 2:49:25. Chuck Engle, 45, of Lancaster, Ohio, was second in 2:58:57. William Hirschfeld, 23 of Hopkinton, New Hampshire, was third in 3:00:43. In the women's race, Thereseann Huprikar, 28, of Freeport, Michigan, was first in 3:13:35. Rachael Lenz, 22, of Cambridge, Massachusetts, was second in 3:24:02. Alison Burke, 31, of Providence, Rhode Island, was third in 3:24:44.
Winning the men’s division of the Mad Half with a time of 1:19:58 was Brian Keefe, 27, of Medford, Massachusetts. Michael Madded, 34, of Boston, Massachusetts, finished second with a time of 1:28:28 and local runner Perch Thompson, 32, of Duxbury finished third with a time of 1:32:51.
Winning the women’s Mad Half was Kath Hardcastle, 35, of Watertown, Massachusetts, with a time of 1:26:33. Local runner Amy Kretz, 45, of Warren finished second with a time of 1:36:30 and third was Celina McMichael, 36, of Kennebunk, Maine, in 1:43:43.
The Hannah’s House Harwood team finished first in the five-person relay with a time of 3:06:17. The winning runners included Anneka Williams, Colin Fennelly, Noah Eckstein, Isabel Jamieson and Jamie Gunness.
Another Hannah’s House three-person relay team of Sam Krotinger, Meg and Pete Raymond won the three-person relay in a time of 3:33:17.
Team English Muffin, Egg Sandwich won the two person Mad Half relay in a time of 1:26:48.
In the Walkers Mad Half, Maria Deangelo, 48, of Saranac Lake, New York, took first place in the women’s field with a time of 2:40:01 and Chester Green, 45, of Chicopee, Massachusetts, won the men’s division in 3:12:11.
Top Vermont runners in the Mad Marathon, men’s division was Chris Matthews, 42, of Westford finishing eighth with a time of 3:12:13. Chloe Wexler, 26, of Fayston took sixth place in the women’s division 3:34:44.
Mad Marathon, Mad Half and Relays are set to run again July 9, 2017.
