Mary I. (Marion) Coffin, 90, passed away in the comfort of her family at Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin on Monday, June 17, 2013. Born in Newport on April 24, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Raymond and Ida (Thomas) Izor. On August 30, 1947, Marion married Robert D. Coffin in Waterbury. Robert, her husband of 65 years, predeceased Marion on November 4, 2012.

 

Marion was a 1941 graduate of Waterbury High School where she was a member of the state championship basketball team. As a young woman, she worked as a telephone operator in Waterbury as well as drove a delivery truck for the Izor family’s ice business. She also worked at the Mid-State Bowling Alley in Waterbury, another Izor family enterprise.

 

Following her marriage, Marion was busy and happy as a homemaker and raising her family. She later became an integral part of her husband’s business for many years, Coffin’s TV in Waterbury. Marion also filled in part time on occasion at the F.C. Luce Co. in Waterbury.

 

A woman of deep Catholic faith, Marion was an active member of St. Andrew Catholic Church, the Catholic Daughters of the Americas – Court St. Theresa and the St. Andrew Altar Society, all of Waterbury. A longtime golf enthusiast along with her husband, she was a member of Blush Hill Country Club as well as the Harry N. Cutting American Legion Auxiliary Unit 59, both of Waterbury.

 

In her leisure time, she enjoyed knitting, creating braided rugs, embroidery as well as spending time with her large and loving family.

 

Marion is survived by her children, Victoria Alberghini and her husband Mark of Waterbury, Jennifer Blacklock and her fiancé Roger Lowe of Waterbury, Denise Catchapaw of Middlebury, and Barry Coffin and his wife Tina of Brandon; her grandsons, Jeff Alberghini and his wife Kate, Matt Alberghini and his wife Michelle, Dustin Coffin and his wife Jen; her granddaughters, Kristi Blacklock and Matt Gratton, Mary Jackman and her husband Pete, Sarah Alberghini Winters and her husband Chris, Bridget Blacklock and Nathan Hayes, Christina Mas and her husband Shane, Rebecca Blacklock and her husband Josh Mandell, Alicia Catchapaw and her partner Kelly Wolff, and Amanda Coffin; her great-grandchildren, Shelby and Avery Alberghini, Ira and Tanner Alberghini, Fox, Lillian, Oren and Calvin Winters, Chessley, Genevieve and Idalee Jackman, Landon and Shaelyn Mas, and Brianna Coffin; her sister, Selma Carpenter and her husband Andrew of Waterbury Center; her brother, Robert Izor and his wife Betty of Barre; her sister-in-law, Rena Izor of Waterbury; as well as nieces, nephews and extended family. Marion was predeceased by three brothers, Calime, Charles and Richard Izor, and two sisters, Emma Clifton and Genevieve LeBourveau.

 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated from St. Andrew Catholic Church in Waterbury on Friday, June 21, 2013, at 11 a.m. with a reception to follow in the church parish hall. Interment will take place in Holy Cross Cemetery, Duxbury.
