Walter Raymond Pitt, 86, of Glastonbury, CT, much-loved husband of Betsey Pitt (Colgan), died Monday, April 22, 2013, at Hartford Hospital.

Walter was born May 12, 1926, to the late William Pitt and Carrie Hudson Pitt in Newton, MA. Walter lived in Glastonbury, CT, for 55 years. Walter served in the United States Army in the 345th Engineer Regiment from 1944 to 1946. His deployment during WWII included a duty station in Florence, Italy. He was honorably discharged at the rank of technician fourth grade. Following his wartime duties, Walter returned home to graduate from Newton High School and attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York. Walter worked for United Aircraft, now United Technologies Corporation, at the Research Center in East Hartford from 1952 to 1991. His career of almost 40 years with UTC encompassed a broad variety of specialties including wind tunnel research and facilities engineering.

Walter was an avid outdoorsman. He built a family cabin in Warren, Vermont, and enjoyed vacationing there for decades. Walter was a founding member and past president of the Warren Alpine Village Association and helped engineer the roadways of the community. Walter enjoyed alpine skiing, especially at Mad River Glen and Sugarbush. He instilled a love of skiing, snowmobiling and hiking in his children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed hunting in Vermont and within Connecticut’s forests. A better day could not be enjoyed by Walter without chopping wood and building a fire to heat the cabin.

Within Glastonbury, Walter was a Gold Key member of Orchard Hill Club. He supported many annual work days at the club and was eager to engineer various maintenance projects to help for a smooth season. Walter was an accomplished auto mechanic and serviced his family’s many vehicles at his home garage. Walter was a member of the Congregational Church in South Glastonbury.
