Charles (Charlie) W. Allen, 90, of Alpine Village, Warren, passed away at his home on Monday afternoon, May 23. He was one of nine children born to Grover C. and Evadnia Allen, in Bridgewater, CT, on June 13, 1920. He is survived by two sisters, Dorothy of Bridgewater, CT, and Catherine of Woodbury, CT; and Brian Coyle of Warren, CT, whom he thought of as a son; as well as many friends.
Charlie grew up on his family’s Maple Hill Dairy Farm in Bridgewater and operated the enterprise himself for many years. He retired from the Southern New England Telephone Co. in 1982 and shortly afterwards moved full time to Warren. He was one of the original settlers of Alpine Village, acquiring his first lots at The Big E in 1960. On this land on Oak Street, he tirelessly hand built what he called The Big A Ranch, his eventual Alpine Village home.
As an original member of the Warren Alpine Village Association, Inc., he became president and led the association off and on through the late 1970s until 1994. In 1977, he led a fund-raising drive to purchase land and build a pavilion for recreational use by the association. The pavilion is still in use today.
He enjoyed all the seasons of Alpine Village for 50 years and many in The Valley will remember him as a colorful, friendly and witty individual who was without a doubt a fixture of Alpine Village. If you needed information about anything Alpine related, you went to see Charlie. He loved gardening and landscaping and enjoyed cross country skiing, snowmobiling, walking and driving the many roads of the Alpine. Driving through the village on a summer day, it was not uncommon to see him on his tractor mowing many of his neighbors’ yards. He would often entertain his fellow “Alpiners” at his home and enjoyed recounting the early days of the village.
Per his wishes, there will be no funeral services.
