Everett Frank Atwood, 90, of Atwood Road, Duxbury, passed away peacefully at the Starr Farm Nursing Home in Burlington on Saturday, November 27, 2010. Born in Bolton on March 15, 1920, he was the son of the late Frank and Bertha (Griffin) Atwood. On July 3, 1942, he married the former Iola Bruce in Montpelier.

Everett served with the U.S. Army during WWII and following his discharge he worked for Central Vermont Railway for 31 years. He then went on to work for National Life Insurance Co. in Montpelier, retiring in 1984 following 17 years of service.

Everett was an avid fisherman, hunter and trapper; was well known for his extraordinary gardening skills; was a part-time real estate agent; loved auctions and listening to the Northeast Fiddlers.

Everett is survived by his wife of 68 years, Iola Atwood of Allenwood Assisted Living in South Burlington; their children, Stephen Atwood and his wife Rae of Essex Junction, Patricia Sherman and her husband Rodney of Duxbury, Raymond Atwood and his companion Tanya Johns of Bradford, and Angela Zwonik and her husband Bob of Colchester; 17 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Eunice Fitzpatrick of Hartford, CT; two brothers, John Atwood and Donald Atwood, both of Richmond; as well as nieces, nephews and extended family. Everett is predeceased by two sons, Douglas Frank Atwood and Richard James Atwood; two sisters, Thelma Ashley and Doris Callahan; and a brother, Orrin "Bud" Atwood.

Funeral services were held from the Wesley United Methodist Church in Waterbury on Wednesday, December 1, 2010, at 11 a.m. Interment took place in the Waterbury Center Cemetery. A reception followed in the church dining room.
