Ruth E. Moriarty, 94, of Graves Farm Road, Waitsfield, passed away at the Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin on Friday, November 5, 2010. Born in Waitsfield on October 30, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Walter C. and Myrtie (Russell) Mann. On September 7, 1935, Ruth married Joseph A. Moriarty in Barre. Mr. Moriarty passed away on October 30, 1972.

Ruth was a 1935 graduate of Waitsfield High School and following her marriage was busy and happy as a homemaker and raising her family. A lifelong resident of Waitsfield, Ruth served the town as town clerk for 17 years, was the town treasurer for many years, the tax collector for 15 years and was a justice of the peace. For several years, Ruth and her husband ran the Mad River Diner.

Ruth's memberships included the Waitsfield United Church of Christ, the Maple Rebekah Lodge #56 of Waitsfield and the Waitsfield Senior Citizens. In her leisure time she enjoyed reading and was a New York Yankees baseball fan. Her family and many friends will fondly remember her wonderful smile and kindness.

Ruth is survived by her children, Patricia Van Schaick and her husband Eugene, Elizabeth Martin, Dolores "Dody" Moriarty, all of Waitsfield, and John D. Moriarty of Poulsbo, WA; 11 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren; as well as nieces, nephews, extended family and her cat, "Sam."

Her son Richard Moriarty, her daughter Helen Moriarty, her grandson Ronald Moriarty, her brother Russell Mann, and two sisters Harriett Neill and Helen Mann predeceased Ruth.

Memorial services will be held from the Waitsfield United Church of Christ on Friday, November 12, 2010, at 11 a.m. with a reception to follow in the church dining room. Inurnment will take place in the Irasville Cemetery, Waitsfield.
