Craig Howard Elwell, 61, of Hathaway Road, Moretown, passed away
unexpectedly at his home on Friday, February 12, 2010. Born in
Montpelier on July 3, 1948, he was the son of the late Ernest and Helen
M. (Cutler) Elwell.
Craig attended schools in Moretown as well as Montpelier High School
and then, as a young man, worked with his brother Daryl as a logger. He
later operated a service station in Waitsfield and then worked in
property management in the Mad River Valley. For the past 22 years
Craig has been the road foreman for the town of Moretown. He took great
pride in his responsibilities, not only maintaining road conditions but
also in the many road improvement projects he managed. He will always
be fondly remembered for the help he gave daily to the residents of
Moretown. Craig loved nature and wildlife and especially enjoyed
cutting firewood on his 10-acre lot in Moretown. As a woodworker, he
enjoyed selling the small tables he crafted at various local craft
venues. His other interests included traveling, meeting people and
seeing new sights, going to the Hot Rod Show in Lake George, NY,
antiques and gardening.
Craig is survived by his loving companion for over 20 years, Nancy
Conrad of Moretown; his children, Sasha Elwell of Berlin and Shane
Elwell and his wife Kelley of Leesburg, FL; three grandchildren, Erin
Elwell, Anthony Wood and Dustin Wood; three brothers, Adrian Elwell and
his wife Mickie of Newport, Reginald Elwell and Daryl Elwell, both of
Moretown; as well as nieces, nephew and extended family.
A celebration of Craig's life will be held from the Waitsfield United
Church of Christ on March 7, 2010, at 2 p.m. with a reception to follow
in the church dining room. The family requests that flowers be omitted;
rather memorial gifts would be appreciated to the Mad River Valley
Ambulance Service, P.O. Box 305, Waitsfield, VT 05673. To send online
condolences please visit www.perkinsparker.com. Assisting the family is
