John D. "Buddy" Sherman, 82, passed away Saturday, October 18, 2008, of natural causes in his home in Jamestown, RI.

Buddy moved with his family in tow from the busy streets of Chicago to the rural spaces of Waitsfield in the early 1960s seeking a different life.

He founded Gallagher's soon thereafter, thinking a lively and spirited home away from home was something the Mad River Valley might embrace. He was right, and right away Gallagher's was the place to visit after a long day on the slopes or just a great place to unwind after a hard workday. Many will always remember the long bar brought in from the windy city or won't soon forget the even longer classic fire trucks in the parking lot.

Buddy left some years later developing a keen interest in sailing old boats and writing about the current scene in his pre-internet days as publisher and owner of The Newporter in Newport, Rhode Island.

Later in life, Buddy lived and lived well in England, France, Germany and Greece before returning home eventually to Jamestown close to the ocean he loved.

He is survived by his considerable and capable brood including Christie, Harry, Jody, Jamie, John Jr., Sarah, Rachel, Max, Willie and Hannah Sherman...wow!

He was predeceased by his beloved father Mr. Harry Wilson Sherman in 1945 and his mother Mrs. Marjory E. Kanrich in 2007, along with his hero and mentor Mr. Will Rogers!
