Theodore "Ted" Jerome Mapes, 76, of Waitsfield, passed away at the Rowan Court Health and Rehabilitation Center in Barre on Friday, June 29, 2007. Born in Buffalo, NY, on July 29, 1930, he was the son of the late Jerome and Blanche (Gorham) Mapes. On April 17, 1991, he married the former Elizabeth Phillips in Middletown, CT.

Ted was a 1948 graduate of Weedsport (NY) High School and continued his education at Yale University where he received a bachelor of science in electrical engineering in 1952 followed by a master's degree in electrical engineering in 1954. In 1996 he earned a Ph.D. in ocean engineering from the University of Rhode Island.

Ted worked as an electrical engineer throughout his long and distinguished career, most notably for MASA in Massachusetts, General Dynamics in both Maryland and Connecticut, and then for over 20 years he was employed by the Naval Underwater System Center in New London, CT, which later became the Naval Undersea Warfare Center in Newport, RI, retiring in 1997.

His memberships included the Acoustical Society of America, the Yale Club of Vermont where he served as secretary, the Yale Alumni Association, a nominated member of Sigma Xi, a member of Morey's and a member of St. Dunstan's Community.

In his leisure time, he enjoyed woodworking, doing projects around his home that included using John Deere, writing poetry and caring for his dog, "Susie."

Ted is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, of Waitsfield; his children, Deborah Mapes and her husband Kevin Doyle of Watertown, MA, Wendy Mapes of Jersey City, NJ, and Brian Mapes of Old Saybrook, CT; his sister, Molly Colvin and her husband Russell of Virginia Beach, VA; his former wife, Marilyn Mapes of Old Saybrook, CT; as well as nieces, nephews and extended family.

A celebration of Ted's life will be held from the Waitsfield United Church of Christ on Thursday, July 5, at 2 p.m. where friends may call from 12:30 p.m. until the hour of the service. The Rev. Lisa Ransom, vicar of St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church, will officiate. Interment will follow services in the Waitsfield Common Cemetery.
