Born September 22, 1935, in Plainfield, he was the son of Wayland N. and Albina (Buley) Hamel. He attended school in Plainfield and graduated from Plainfield High School in 1953. While in school Anson was active in Boy Scouts and later scoutmaster for the Plainfield Boy Scout Troop.
He married Marie Metcalf on July 12, 1958. They made their home in Plainfield for many years, moving to Moretown in 1990 and recently purchased a home in Montpelier. In earlier years he worked for the Vermont Sheltered Workshop in Montpelier and at Bennington Potters in Bennington, VT. He worked at Goddard College for many years while living in Plainfield. He was a rural mail carrier for the Town of Warren from 1988 until his retirement in December 2000.
While living in Plainfield he was active on the Twinfield School Board and also the Village Trustees. For many years he and his friends were well known for their chicken BBQs and fireworks at the annual Fourth of July celebration. He was also a member of the Plainfield Volunteer Fire Department. His hobbies during this time were horseshoes, softball and the weekly cribbage league.
Throughout his life Anson enjoyed home improvements and tinkering. He also took great pleasure in working on projects at his daughters' houses. A lifelong Red Sox fan, he became a Mountaineers and Frost Heaves fan for local entertainment. Buying and displaying his collection of unusual clocks and banks became his most recent hobby.
As he and Marie drew nearer to retirement they began playing golf, mainly at the Montpelier Elks Country Club. He celebrated his two holes-in-one during the summer of 2002. He played on the men's league until this year when his health would not allow it. Each year they took golf vacations with their longtime friends, Ed and Shelby Blow and Gordon and Marie Blow.
Survivors include his wife; daughters Michelle Dickinson and her husband Paul and Vallerie Morse and her husband Brian; grandchildren Betsy and Kimberly Dickinson of Castleton, Erica and Glen Rogers and Lauren Morse of Berlin. He is also survived by a brother, Arnold Hamel and his wife Karen of Phoenix, AZ, and sisters Letitia Rydjeski of Randolph and Mary Hamel of Dixon, MO.
Calling hours were held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 13, 2007, at Guare & Sons Funeral Home, 30 School Street, Montpelier.
A graveside memorial service will be offered Thursday, June 14, at 10 a.m. at Plainmont Cemetery, Route 2, East Montpelier, VT.
