Gordon Malcolm Sutherland Jr., 77, of Waterbury Center, passed away at his home on Saturday, October 21, 2006, following a long illness. Born in Montpelier on March 11, 1929, he was the son of the late Gordon M. and Mildred (Woodard) Sutherland. On November 29, 1952, he married the former Marion "Susie" Sloat in Hartford, CT.
Gordon was a 1947 graduate of Waterbury High School. A veteran of the Korean War, he served four years in the U.S. Navy and was assigned to a destroyer escort unit station in New London, CT. Following his discharge from the service, Gordon returned to Waterbury Center and became employed by the Maintenance Division of the Vermont Agency of Transportation, retiring in 1991 after 37 years of service.
Gordon was a longtime member of Winooski Lodge 49 F&AM in Waterbury, the Mt. Sinai Shrine, where he served as Captain of Patrol for several years, and was an ANARA Associate Shrine Member in West Palm Beach, FL. His other memberships included the Harry N. Cutting American Legion Post 59 of Waterbury, the Montpelier Elks Club, the Destroyer Escort Sailors Association, the N.R.A. as an Endowment Member, the Vermont State Retired Employees Association, and a Lifetime Member of the Clan Sutherland Society of America.
In his leisure time, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and golf. In retirement, Gordon and Susie spent winters in Boynton Beach, FL.
Gordon is survived by his wife of 54 years, Susie Sutherland of Waterbury Center; his brother, Stuart Sutherland, and his wife, Mary, of North Adams, MA; two nephews, Stuart Sutherland Jr. of Fort Lauderdale, FL, and Douglas Sutherland of Swampscott, MA; and two nieces, Joan Canty of Grapevine, TX, and Kate Supple of West Roxbury, MA.
Funeral services were held from the Waterbury Center Community Church on Tuesday, October 24, at 2 p.m. There were no calling hours. Interment followed the services in the Waterbury Center Cemetery.
