Elaine Barlow Baker, 89, a longtime resident of Waterbury, passed away in the comfort of her family at Woodridge Nursing Home on Monday morning, October 2, 2006. Born at home at Beaver Brook Farm in Wilmington on June 1, 1917, she was the only child of the late Greeley and Elsie (Barlow) Brown. On June 18, 1938, she married Newton H. Baker in Wilmington. Mr. Baker passed away on January 13, 2005.
Elaine was a graduate of Wilmington High School and continued her education at Middlebury College. While living in Wilmington, she was a lifetime member and past worthy matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, Mayflower Chapter #19.
Moving to Waterbury in 1946, she spent her life as a homemaker as well as a devoted wife and mother. She took great pride in her family's many activities and accomplishments throughout the years. Her memberships included the Morning Star Chapter #23 OES of Waitsfield, the Queen Esther Chapter #7 OES of Waterbury, and the Waterbury Congregational Church where she served on a number of committees.
Elaine is survived by her children, Diane B. Harper and her friend, Jayson Henderson, of Burnt Hills NY, Newton B. Baker and his wife, Diane, of Montpelier, Philip G. Baker of Waterbury, Brenda B. Baker and her husband, Louis, of Waterbury, Martha B. Fiske and her husband, Dwight, of Waterbury Center, and Donald M. Baker and his wife, Maureen, of Ketchum, Idaho; 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; as well as nieces, nephews and extended family. She was predeceased by two great-grandchildren, Taeya Elaine Fiske and Drake Edward Labbe.
A service of remembrance will be held from the Waterbury Congregational Church on Friday, October 6, at 2 p.m. with a reception to follow in the church dining room. Committal services for both Elaine and Newton Baker will take place in the Riverview Cemetery, Wilmington on Saturday, October 7, at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts would be appreciated to Central Vermont Home Health and Hospice, 600 Granger Road, Barre, VT 05641.
