Richard (Rick) Gioia, 58, of Waterville, Vermont, passed away on February 8, 2025.
Richard was born on October 4, 1966, in Summit, New Jersey, the son of Dolores (Peter) and James F. Gioia.
Richard graduated from Union High School in Union, NJ, in 1984. He dedicated his career to providing compassionate care for individuals with disabilities. Most recently, he worked with Green Mountain Support Services, but the majority of his 25-year career was spent with Upper Valley Services, where he made a lasting impact through his kindness and commitment.
Richard enjoyed drawing, photography, reading, cooking, music, and woodworking. He was known for his gentle nature and sense of humor. He also had a deep love for animals and cherished his pets. He is survived by his beloved dog, Fiona, and was preceded in death by his faithful dog, Buddy, and his dear cats, Baxter and Gato.
While living in Berlin, NH, Rick took the initiative to start a local food pantry and soup kitchen. What began as him handing out bag lunches in the parks quickly grew into a larger effort – serving full meals in a church building and feeding hundreds in need. Though he has since moved away, the impact of his work lives on, with these services continuing to this day, a testament to his dedication and impact on the community.
Remaining to cherish Richard’s memory are his two siblings, James Gioia, and Donna Volpe and her husband, Michael Volpe; nephews, Michael Volpe and Thomas Volpe; niece, Kristen Volpe; and many cousins, special friends and colleagues.
Richard is preceded in death by his parents, Dolores and James Gioia.
