Stuart “Steven” Crossman, 86, passed away peacefully on January 17, 2025, at his home in Marlborough, MA.
Steven is survived by his devoted wife Carole, and his two sons, Edward (wife Lindsay) and Daniel (wife Katharina). He is also survived by five grandchildren, Carson, Kaelynn, and Madeline-Quinn, Finja and Lena and one great-grandson, Roman. Steven was predeceased by his brother Harlan Crossman.
Steven was born in Brooklyn, NY, to the late Joseph Golden and Mary (Cohen) Crossman. He was raised by his mother Mary and his adoptive father, Sydney Crossman in Albuquerque, NM.
He was a strong baseball player at Valley High School in Albuquerque and then went on to the University of New Mexico, and later the University of Tennessee to get his degree in biochemistry.
He began working as a medical technician in Brooklyn, where he met his wife Carole (Walther) a nurse at the hospital. They married in 1966, and lived briefly on Long Island before moving to Kinnelon, NJ, where they began raising a family. After working a few years as a biochemist for Pfizer, his entrepreneurial spirit started to emerge, and he launched his own lawn care business. Having success with this business he decided to undertake a large land development project that would span more that 25 years. His company built beautiful homes and was commended for leaving them in a natural, wooded setting. He also owned and operated three package retail stores with many employees. He was fair, understanding, and treated all employees with respect. Employees loved to work for him and stayed on staff for years. He also threw great company parties.
He was politically active in Kinnelon during the late 70s, and also involved in the community with the town planning board and various committees.
In 1977, they bought a shabby house on Tucker Hill Road (where the bands from Mooselips used to stay). They fixed it up to the ultimate ski lodge and it became a family treasure for many years and many unforgettable weekends. Steve and Carole moved to Warren 25 years later, to a home on Airport Road.
Steve loved sports and activities with his two boys Ed and Dan. He enjoyed golf, softball, tennis, skiing, and coaching Little League where he won a few championships. Steve deeply enjoyed time with his family at their home in the Mad River Valley. Countless days were spent skiing at Mad River Glen where he and his wife Carole helped teach children skiing through the Fayston school program. He loved The Valley in summer as well, hosting many friends and family and loved to golf at Sugarbush and at the club in Waterbury.
Steve will be deeply missed by his family and friends. He had a great sense of humor and was always ready with a joke or a prank. He was a warm and generous father, a wise mentor, and inspired and supported family and friends all around him.
There will be no public service, his life will be celebrated in the spring with immediate family in Waitsfield.
