Stephen Lacey
On December 11, 2024, just days shy of his 72nd birthday, Stephen Lacey died after bravely living with cancer for the past 3.5 years. Steve was born in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, UK, on December 15, 1952, to Brian and Beryl (Corbett) Lacey. He joined the Ordnance Survey in 1971, where he worked as a cartographer and surveyor for 21 years. His career fueled his lifelong love of maps.
Steve moved to Waitsfield in 1992, and married Ruth (Wood) Lacey. Together they purchased the Waitsfield Inn and spent the next six years as innkeepers. Over the 32 years of living in Waitsfield, Steve became well known as the guy who rode his bicycle in any type of weather, and any day of the year. Cycling was his passion. He traveled and cycle-toured in both hemispheres, and multiple continents. He particularly enjoyed returning to England and cycling the country lanes of his homeland, which often included a stop at a pub.
Steve was preceded in death by his father Brian, and mother Beryl. He is survived by his wife Ruth. No services are planned per Steve’s wishes. Donations in his memory can be made to the Mad River Valley Community Fund www.mrvcommunityfund.org/donate
