Robert Joseph Neuberger
1934-2022
On the morning of December 18, 2022, Robert J Neuberger, 88, of Warren, VT, passed peacefully at home. Bob is survived by his wife of 47 years, Barbara, sons Robert Jr, Michael, Walter, daughter in law Bethany and granddaughter Eleanor.
In his late teens Bob built a 21-foot daysailer handcrafted entirely of wood named Bold Venture. Bob taught himself how to sail and launched out of Black Rock Harbor on the Long Island Sound. The building process of the sailboat in Bob’s backyard was documented by the Bridgeport Post around 1954.
Bob was a professional engineer during his career specializing in mechanical tool design and fabrication primarily for the machining of industrial vacuum pumps.
After work, Bob did not sit idle. He designed, engineered, built, and remodeled every home he has lived in since his father built his childhood home in Fairfield, CT. In 1970 he purchased the plot of land at the top of Roxbury Gap where he constructed the original cabin enabling him and his family to become the diehard weekend warrior skiers that Bob represented in every unwavering aspect of his life.
Bob enrolled all three boys in the Sugarbush/GMVS race program and truly enjoyed carting us all over VT encouraging our success in being the best skiers we could be.
Bob led by example, encouraging Barbara’s brother, nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends to join in all the fun of skiing at Sugarbush. As a result, Bob was responsible for numerous ski enthusiasts. We were one of the rowdy bunches at the Wonderbar during its heyday, with Bob in the center smiling and singing along with family and friends.
Bob always knew he would retire on that plot of land and in his later years was happiest sitting on the porch looking over the valley and across to Sugarbush.
Behind his tougher exterior Bob channeled a bit of creativeness aside from skiing and woodworking. He brought his own style of artistry as a poet, chef, dancer, and singer.
Bob was a worker, husband, father, friend, and all-around raconteur. May he rest in peace.
The family would appreciate donations to the Mad River Ambulance Service -- the family cannot thank MRVAS enough for their courtesy and professionalism in times of need -- in lieu of flowers. 4177 Main Street, P.O. Box 305, Waitsfield, VT 05673.
