Robert B. Haynes died at home in Waitsfield on September 17, 2019. He was 91. Born and raised in New York City, he attended the Buckley School, Deerfield Academy and graduated cum laude from Harvard University, followed by Yale Law School. He was an avid sailor and an enthusiastic rider. He was commissioned by Squadron A of the New York National Guard during the Korean War. He was associated with an old New York law firm before becoming general counsel of a multinational conglomerate.
Surviving from an earlier marriage is his daughter, Sophy T. Haynes, and her son, Sebastian Haynes, and a son, Robbie van Renselear Haynes. Predeceasing him was a son, Sgt. 1st Class Schuyler B. Haynes, killed on active duty in Iraq. Also surviving him is his wife of 15 years, Chessie Stevenson, and his stepsons, Peter Stevenson of Waitsfield and William Stevenson and his partner Jill Kozlowski of Red Bank, New Jersey, their son, Benjamin, and two other children, Jacob and Lily Stevenson, from an earlier marriage to Annabelle Hoffman. A memorial service will be held on October 29 at 11 a.m. at the Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church in New York.
