Jay H. S. Young, 73, a longtime and well-known businessman in the Mad River Valley, passed away at Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin on Tuesday, January 20, 2015. Born in Bermuda on January 19, 1942, he was the son of the late John H. and Nelga (Spurling) Young. On December 15, 1969, Jay married the former Renate Kapfer in Arlington, Virginia.
Jay grew up and attended school in Bermuda and continued his education first at Ridley Prep School in Canada and then attended Cornell University where he received his certificate in hotel administration. He began his long and distinguished career in the hospitality industry in Jamaica where he owned and operated the Plantation Inn in Ocho Rios. Moving to the Mad River Valley in 1977, Jay purchased Sugarbush Inn and Golf Course and, in addition, developed Club Sugarbush and The Farms Townhouse Condominiums, all in Warren. Following the sale of these business enterprises, Jay followed his love of cooking and founded Jay's Restaurant and The Spotted Cow restaurant, both in Waitsfield, from which he retired due to declining health.
Jay is survived by his wife of 45 years, Renate Young of Fayston; his children, Melanie Young of Fayston, John H. Young III and his wife Alison of Bermuda and Nicole O'Connell and her husband Declan of Bermuda; two granddaughters, Hinson Catherine Young and Aisling O'Connell; his sister, Penny Leseur and her husband Paul of Bermuda; as well as extended family.
Graveside services will be held this spring from Bragg Hill Cemetery in Fayston on a date and time to be announced.
