James F. "Jim" Gioia, 83, of Warren, VT, passed away at Mayo Healthcare in Northfield on Sunday evening, December 7, 2014. Born in Brooklyn, NY, on March 22, 1931, he was the son of the late Joseph and Clara (Werner) Gioia. On May 27, 1961, he married the former Dolores Peter in Union, NJ. Dolores predeceased Jim on March 26, 2001.

Jim attended schools in Brooklyn, NY, and then enlisted in the U.S. Army where he was stationed in the South Pacific. Following his discharge from the service, Jim began a long career with the United States Postal Service, first in Union, NJ, and then later in Elizabeth, NJ, retiring in 1991.

Having made their first sojourn to the Mad River Valley in Vermont for their honeymoon in 1961, their affection for the area remained and culminated in 1977 when he and Dolores built a home in Warren. They summered here until becoming full-time residents in 1992.

In his leisure time, Jim enjoyed woodworking, furniture making, classical music and the opera. He particularly enjoyed the annual Green Mountain Opera Festival. He is fondly remembered for his wry wit and sense of humor.

Gioia of Springfield, MO; three grandchildren, Michael Volpe, Thomas Volpe and Kristen Volpe; a sister, Gene Robinson and her husband, Lenord, of Warren; a sister-in-law, Mary Gioia of Deer Park, NY; as well as nieces, nephews and extended family.
