To The Editor:
In the latter part of the 19th century the Warren dam system powered nine local industries from butter tubs to clothes pins. After the great flood of 1927 only the dam next to the covered bridge was rebuilt.
These days the dam powers nothing. It is there for the tourists.
But it is now coming apart piecemeal. Debris piles up against it. So much for aesthetic value. The state is not interested in repairing or demolishing it. The locals are of mixed opinion. After the last two super storms it would appear that repair may be impractical and that nature will simply take its course.
Whether it will just continue to chip away piecemeal or reach a critical point and collapse spectacularly is anyone's guess. Someday we may hear a stupendous roar that isn't thunder.
