To The Editor:
Still in the spirit of Thanksgiving – gratitude and congratulations must go out to Harwood Union for attaining the EPA's Energy Star certification.
This accomplishment is an inspiring example of a win-win-win situation. A big win for the school financially and comfort-wise, an educational win for the students who were able to strategize solutions and learn about stewardship and a cumulative win for the environment – something we hold very dear here in The Valley and Vermont!
Special thanks should go to Ray Daigle, director of facilities and operations, and the staff, faculty and administration for having the vision and commitment to embark on what must have seemed a daunting task some four years ago. Now that the project has been brought to fruition, we can all be proud of what has been accomplished on many levels. The icing on the cake in this undertaking was the students' participation and involvement which empowered them to see that they can make a difference.
Harwood's achievement and the end results are a perfect example of what needs to happen all across the state and country to continue moving us away from fossil fuels and towards cleaner, greener energy efficiency and conservation.
We look forward to more great results from Project Green School, the initiative that seeks to put all Vermont schools on a path toward energy conservation and efficiency. We encourage these good practices to expand into other town buildings – municipal, commercial and residential.
Thank you, Harwood Union, for showing us how it's done!
