To The Editor:
I was quite disturbed at the photo that was chosen for the front page of the October 31 The Valley Reporter.
Certainly, I was saddened that this enormous, beautiful moose was taken from its natural environment and reduced to a corpse hanging upside-down at the weigh station. Although I have been here long enough to have developed some acceptance of the hunt, the obvious indignity of this visible transformation was very sharp.
What was far more troubling, however, was the fact that this photo appeared on the front page of The Valley Reporter. I can understand that there may have been great excitement surrounding the taking of this animal. I do not understand why the Reporter decided to make this dreadful photo a front-page display.
While not everyone will buy and read The VR, I suspect that nearly all saw the front page at some point of sale. That means that every non-hunter, vegan and child (just to identify some groups) was unavoidably exposed to this photo. This photo, placed where it was rather than on the page perennially dedicated to hunt photos, was a needless affront to many. The VR is usually pretty thoughtful about such matters but not this time.
