To The Editor:
If you are like most Valley residents you are thinking more about tuning up your skis or snow machines than you are thinking about Little League baseball. Believe it or not there is months' worth of planning that enables the Mad River Valley Little League (MRVLL) season to go on without a hitch and some of that planning starts in the fall.
We had a great year this past spring. While our numbers for the higher levels of play were a bit down we still were able to field two successful All-Stars teams with the 11 to 12 years olds advancing farther than they have in years. Our T-ball and farm league levels were about where they usually are providing a fun season for the 5 to 8 year olds.
Our coaches are on the frontlines during the season supplying the leadership and commitment each of our players need to improve and have fun. Parent volunteers play a huge role in the success of the league by weeding, raking and hauling dirt prior to opening day to make our fields some of the best in our district. They also put in time working shifts in the snack shack and most important of all they are there to cheer on all of our kids.
MRVLL is a registered nonprofit organization run by a board of directors. The board is responsible for keeping our charter with the national Little League organization up to date, for organizing coaches, registering players, ordering uniforms and playing equipment, scheduling games and umpires, organizing all volunteers for the snack shack and developing the fundraising raffle among much, much more. We are looking for people willing to join the board and help sustain what has been an integral part of the lives of many Valley kids for decades – Little League baseball.
Board members typically meet once per month during the winter months and twice per month or more in the couple of months leading up to opening day. On October 10, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Bongiorno's Restaurant, we will be holding our annual meeting open to all as required by the National LL. Please come by to chat with our current members if you are interested in joining the board or just interested in MRVLL.
This year we will be losing at least two members of the board so if we are to continue the success of this great league it is crucial to find replacements. Additional members are also desired to help spread out the workload. Feel free to contact any of the current members of the board to find out more.
