‘Interested minority’
To The Editor:
I agree with the letter Mason wrote last week where he was lamenting the apparent lack of interest many people have about voting – especially when it is an issue that impacts local taxes. But to answer his question, he must understand that the people who take the time to “weigh in” deserve to have their votes counted and be taken most seriously because they care enough to be there. They represent the “interested minority” and simply because their numbers are small, it does not mean they should not be considered to be representative of the wishes of their town. They are just acting in a responsible manner and showing that they value their right to vote, a privilege which we all share. Apathy is a very difficult challenge to understand or fight. You always have a chance to get what you vote for and showing up, unless it is an Australian ballot, is the first requirement.
