Everybody Wins is well run and training is provided. Joy Worland, the librarian at the Joslin Memorial Library, is our wonderful school coordinator. As volunteer mentors we spend one hour a week with our student partners sharing a love of books.

I read to my student partner while he draws pictures about the book. He reads to me while I marvel at his enthusiasm. When we walk down the hall together to get his lunch, he tells everybody we see, "This is my mentor," because he is so proud to have one.

Each week, the students are so excited to see us and we are excited to see them. There is nothing as rewarding as reading together and as spending time with a child one on one. The hour goes by very quickly.

Last week on my reading day, my student partner was home sick from school. I can't begin to tell you how sad I was. That's when I knew I was hooked. My bag of books would have to wait until the next week. I hope to read with my young partner for all his years at Waitsfield Elementary School.

In all the years and in all the ways that I have volunteered, I have never had a volunteer experience that is as incredible as this.

Volunteers are still being accepted. There are several more children at the school that are eager for partners. If you can share just one hour a week with a child you will be greatly rewarded. You can learn more about the program at everybodywinsvt.org or by contacting Joy Worland at Joslin Memorial Library.
