After our courts ordered the Legislature to create civil unions, it fell
to Markowitz, as secretary of state, to devise a workable plan for
implementation. Markowitz wrote the civil union ceremony and guided
reluctant town clerks through the introduction of the new law. She
championed equality at all times partly because this was her job but
also because it had personal resonance for her. As Markowitz has stated
on numerous occasions, she has three lesbian sisters, a fact which makes
marriage equality an issue especially close to her heart.
As secretary of state, it is Deb Markowitz who has overseen the implementation of same-sex marriage in Vermont.
This
November the Republicans are running an avowed opponent of LGBT rights
as their candidate. A GOP victory in November would be a blow for
equality for all Vermonters and might put the gains LGBT citizens have
seen over the last few years in peril. We need to think about preserving
equality, not only in choosing a governor but in choosing the candidate
who will run against Brian Dubie this November. Every poll shows that
Deb Markowitz is both strongly committed to LGBT rights and is the only
Democrat who can beat the Republicans this fall.
