After exploring the existing trail network behind the school, we
proposed a recreational trail loop wide enough to accommodate biking
and cross country skiing, include environmental education teaching
stations, and offer a gentler grade more appropriate for elementary
school-age children and community elders. At the same time, we proposed
building a spur to South Hill Road to allow an alternative,
non-motorized way to access the school and village.
Upon receiving a Vermont Parks and Recreation grant last spring, the
team hired a trail designer to design the proposed loop trail and spur.
There has never been any subterfuge or hidden agenda in this process,
as Mr. LaRocca alleged. We worked closely with two members of
Moretown's Planning Commission (now former members) and the school
board, and have attended multiple select board meetings and a special
town forum.
Some concerns about the width of the trail, both in terms of
environmental impacts and the potential for misuse by ATVs, have been
expressed at these meetings, as well as a desire to finalize the town's
draft land management plan (available for review at the Moretown Town
Clerk) before addressing the trail.
The overall goals of the proposed trail have not changed through these
discussions -- improved access to recreation, fitness, and
environmental education, and an alternative route to school (and
village). I take quite the opposite view from Mr. LaRocca and his
unfortunate choice of metaphor, and see this trail discussion as a
catalyst for respectful community dialogue as we manage the great
resource our town forest presents.
