A while ago there was a popular country song praising Nashville
tunesmiths that featured the line "God Bless the boys who make the
noise on Sixteenth Avenue."
The same blessing could also be bestowed upon the boys who make the
noise on Main Street in Moretown, School Road in Warren, and somewhat
more remote locations in Fayston and Waitsfield. Their job is done most
effectively soon after the snow, sleet or freezing rain starts
accumulating and continues until the storm abates. Therefore it rarely
coincides with everyone else's preferred waking hours, especially if
the roads have to be ready for the school bus routes before they
commence.
This winter has been characterized by an uncanny string of
precipitation events occurring practically every other day, requiring
long and lonely hours of plowing, sanding and salting to manage
effectively, with little time for cleanup and equipment maintenance in
between. And among the unfortunate but inevitable consequences of this
operation, if done safely and effectively, is the noise generated by
diesel engines and backup alarms.
So give the boys your constructive criticism all right, but a blessing once in a while would be greatly appreciated.
