Do the village residents mentioned in the article really think the road
crew wants to be working at 1:30 a.m. if they felt they did not have to
be? If the road crew did not sand through the wee hours of the night
when icy road conditions prevail, there are many emergency and on-call
personnel who may not be able to commute to work or return home safely.
Also there are times when if the road crew did not sand through the
night, they themselves may not be able to make it in to work the next
morning.
The article also mentions, "Why so much sand?" I respond by saying how
much is "too much sand?" Anyone who commutes on the back roads
routinely knows that a perfectly dry, passable road can be fine one
moment and then turn into a sheet of ice if it starts raining and the
road temperature is cold enough.
I also would like to respond to the comment that the road crew are
"like boys playing with dump trucks." I would like to know how many
little boys would be willing to miss a major part of winter weekends
off and major holidays and willing to work 12 to 15 hours a day as
needed at times when winter storms prevail?
Please, let's not forget what we, as town residents, owe all of the
road crews who routinely go above and beyond what their jobs require
and are not always appreciated for the work they do.
