I was impressed with the fact that the AOT big wigs were there quickly to deal with the problem on site, but why wasn't this serious flaw in the bridge diagnosed years ago? These bridges are "inspected yearly"?
Further exacerbating this problem is that there is not a convenient alternative to this busy span. The AOT in their "wisdom" took the Lover's Lane bridge off the repair schedule a few years ago. Lover's Lane has been closed for quite a few years. Thusly, a huge amount of vehicle miles traveled is cut off from a key service, the WSI landfill. This I find was extremely shortsighted and unsafe and unwise. Again, who is in charge of these decisions?
Now there will be a huge traffic disruption, as much of the landfill traffic will have to travel through Waterbury, including large container-bearing trucks. The Moretown taxpayers now have to spend more gas dollars to travel all the way up Route 100 to Route 2, and then out to the WSI facility and, yes, don't forget the return trip at $4 plus per gallon.
This state really needs to wake up and address its infrastructure problems. How can we expect tourist dollars if we don't have decent main roads, oh yeah, complete with paint lines for them to travel on. What is so sacred about grabbing $10 million from the reserve fund and really getting roads like Route 2 in better shape?
I trust our new AOT secretary has some backbone and opts to get some of these serious issues addressed. Meanwhile, we taxpayers will have more of our hard-earned paychecks depleted by yet another bureaucratic snafu.
