To The Editor:
The other day I visited the Joslin Library to pick up books on the front porch. Usually I park on Bridge Street when I go to the library, but on this day, I had parked in the lot across Route. 100. So, I went to the pedestrian crosswalk and waited, and waited, and waited. Three cars sped by, two from Vermont and one from Massachusetts. I was wearing a bright red parka and was certainly visible but nothing in the drivers’ actions indicated that they knew this was a crosswalk and they should stop. Finally a Vermont car stopped and I crossed.
This is a busy crossing, often used by kids going to the VG or coming and going from swimming. We need to make sure drivers understand that they need to stop. And, of course, there is the Carroll Road crossing where a life was lost.
I strongly support having pedestrian signs that have flashing lights that can be activated for 30 seconds by pushing a button before crossing. Many of these solar-powered signs have been installed throughout the state.
I am part of a group advocating for a rapid solution to our problem. Check out the crosswalks the next time you cross the road. Chances are you’ll also find that drivers are oblivious to our crossings.
