To The Editor:
This past week saw some related stories. The UN Panel on Climate Change warned of “dire” consequences if drastic action is not taken to curtail greenhouse gases. A Nobel Prize was awarded to two economists for quantifying the social costs of carbon emissions. A storm over unusually warm water developed into a Category 4 hurricane that devastated Florida’s panhandle.
Worldwide remedies are necessary, but we can act locally. We have an opportunity in The Valley to send a committed environmentalist to the Vermont State House. Kari Dolan is the Clear Water Initiative Manager in the Department of Environmental Conservation. She has long worked to preserve the beauty and viability of our community. When I think about the importance of our winter sports, lakes and rivers, and maple syrup to Vermont, I can think of no better person to represent us than Kari Dolan.
