To The Editor:
Read with interest this week’s Flashback when three major fires occurred in 1944. One of those occurred in December and resulted in the total destruction of my father’s gristmill on Bridge Street, now the site of the Miramar Ski Club. The fire also resulted in a total loss to Paul Moriarty’s sawmill, located close behind the gristmill. Both were water-powered at the time with water coming through the dug canal from the backwater formed by the Big Eddy Dam. Both were rebuilt but did not remain as mills for long.
