To The Editor:

The current election cycle – quite an interesting one to witness as a teen approaching voting age – has been full of promises by both parties and all candidates. While these hopeful assurances – typically advertised as a way to better the future of our country – are remarkable in their motivational power, evidenced by the record turnout of young people in many primaries, they are often lacking in substance and feasibility.

But, in this state, away from the pressures of national politics and unreasonable promises, there is the possibility for real, lasting, achievable change to occur. The creation of an Energy Independence Fund would support the development of renewable energy resources and allocate greater energy assistance to the underserved by instituting a carbon pollution tax on large national fossil fuel companies when importing their petroleum products into Vermont. In addition to supporting low-income weatherization and statewide energy efficiency, the majority of revenue from this tax would allow for a significant decrease in sales and business tax rates. Programs like this are common throughout the rest of the world. You can help make it possible here in Vermont by contacting your legislative representatives and asking them to support the Energy Independence Fund.
