To The Editor:
The recent article about Elmer Mehuron and the store brought back some childhood memories. My father, Riford Joslin, used to send me “overstreet” to Mehuron’s store to get a sample of the store cheese that was being sold. If the sample met his approval, I would return for a pound of cheddar wrapped in brown store paper and tied with white butcher’s string. I delivered the Burlington Free Press starting when I was 8. The papers were delivered to Waitsfield on the Nabisco Bread truck driven by Blondy DeCoteau. He would drop the bundle off on the porch of Mehuron’s store for my pickup. First thing after untying the bundle was to leave the designated number of papers inside the store for pickup by customer’s who were outside my walking area. Sometimes the bread truck got to the store before it opened and I could wait in the truck where it was warm in the winter. The candy counter up front was a frequent destination at lunchtime from school.
