To The Editor:
Dear Community Members,
Peace Alliance is a student-run community service organization at Harwood. This year Peace Alliance is working with the Association for Africans Living in Vermont (AALV), an organization devoted to promoting equal opportunity, dignity and self-sufficiency for refugee and immigrant individuals and families in Vermont. AALV started out as an organization to bring together a small group of new Africans in Vermont and over time has reached out to many other ethnic groups including Bhutanese, Burmese and Iraqi refugees.
As the winter season is approaching, Peace Alliance is organizing a warm clothing drive with all donations going to AALV. Many of the refugees come with simply the clothes on their backs and are not equipped for Vermont's chilly winters. Winter apparel of all sizes such as coats, fleeces, snow pants, boots, mittens, hats and socks would all be greatly appreciated. We will also be collecting donations of yarn with which the refugees can knit their own hats and mittens.
There will be collection boxes at Moretown, Fayston, Waitsfield, Warren and Thatcher Brook Elementary Schools, as well as Crossett Brook and Harwood Union Middle/High School from October 24 to November 5.
We hope that you all can help us make these new Vermonters feel at home and cozy this winter! Thanks in advance! For more information or questions please contact Rachael Potts at
