Another year, another chance to predict what might happen in the coming months. But before doing so, there are a few things that no one could have predicted about what happened in 2013 in The Valley.
Not-predicted 1: The business resurgence that started on Bridge Street spread to other parts of Waitsfield and The Valley. Egan's sold, the White Horse Inn re-opened, Mad River Barn was renovated and re-opened and the former Easy Street Café is re-opening as The Elusive Moose Pub and Eatery. Who knew?
Not-predicted 2: The State Department of Education in its wisdom would pull a last-minute bait and switch to try to put Granville and Hancock in the Washington West Supervisory Union with inadequate local comment or participation in the process. Stay tuned!
Not-predicted 3: Some acronym-sounding planning process (V-DAT = Vermont Downtown Action Team) would roll into town and engage dozens of community members in the process of envisioning what our villages are and could be. Well played.
2014 Prediction 1: The miscreant vandal or vandals who caused $100,000 in damage to the school in May 2013 will be caught.
2014 Prediction 2: The dangerous intersection of Route 100B and Moretown Mountain Road will not be fixed.
2014 Prediction 3: There will be beer. Canteen Brewery and Pub will get permits to open in Mad River Green Shopping Center and Cousins Brewery will begin serving at Localfolk Smokehouse.
2014 Prediction 4: Mud season will be deep. Turn around, don't drown!
2014 Prediction 5: U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders will be greeted like a rock star at the Warren Fourth of July Parade.
2014 Prediction 6: Waitsfield will break ground for its new town offices – Ha Ha, just kidding.
2014 Prediction 7: Moretown will engineer, permit and construct its new town offices and you can take that to the bank!
See you here next year to compare notes.
