There's no such thing as bad weather in the winter. There's only bad clothing or bad gear or bad choices!
To be cowed by any weather in Vermont in the winter is to deny yourself the opportunity to play outside despite the conditions. And playing outside is the key to surviving the short, cold days and long, dark nights of a Vermont winter.
There are the obvious adventures to try such as downhill skiing at either of the amazing resorts here and cross-country skiing at either phenomenal resort (one of which is dog-friendly). And then there are the less obvious adventures such as hiking up Lincoln Gap Road and rocketing down on a Mad River Rocket. Don't limit your sledding to Lincoln Gap Road – hills abound here, look around.
Or hike up Lincoln Gap Road on snowshoes and hike out to Sunset Rock. In the deepest part of winter, the trees that are usually over your head when hiking in summer are now at your knees and ankles.
Walk on a snowy, dirt road at night and admire the stars, or walk on that snowy, dirt road during the day and admire the view.
Try the Skatium in good weather. Try it when it's raining – things get really fast and speedy! Ditto for skiing. Rain doesn't mean skiing won't be good – it just means you have to dress for it.
Stand around the bonfire at American Flatbread waiting for your table to be ready while enjoying a glass of something hot or cold. You'll need appropriate footwear and mittens.
Revel in the mud and occasional early season thaw. It's good for honing your driving skills. Ask local mud-bogger Tiger Baird if it's fun or not! Don't revel in the ice though. Get in and don't drive unless necessary. Ice driving is no one's favorite activity.
Don't let the cold or rain or snow prevent you from playing outside as much as possible and as often as possible. The only way to get the best of winter and cold and snow is not to let it get the best of you. So get geared up and get outside.
