Two locals proved they were hip to horses at the state 4-H Horse Hippology Contest that took place April 5 in Jericho, Vermont. In the novice senior group (ages 14 and up) Nicole Cutler of Waterbury came in first place, and in the junior (ages 8 and 9) group Jordan Bombard of Duxbury came in ninth.
More than 80 4-H club members came out to compete in the statewide competition, which was co-sponsored by the University of Vermont (UVM) Extension and Chittenden County 4-H. The event took place at Freedom Farm and Browns River Middle School.
In the Horse Hippology Contest, participants earned points for their judging skills in both a hunter under saddle and paint horse class as well as for their overall knowledge of breeds, colors and markings, forages, tack, animal nutrition, veterinary procedures, anatomy, horse care and other equine science topics.
The competition included different questions and skills tests for each age group, and rosette ribbons were awarded to the top 10 scorers in each age group. The top four seniors (ages 14 and up) were named to the Vermont 4-H Horse Hippology Team, which will compete this fall at the New England Regional 4-H Horse Contests in Massachusetts and Eastern National 4-H Horse Round-Up in Louisville, Kentucky.
